Insurance for Nutrition

The list below highlights a few of the major insurance companies that covers nutrition services and resources on healthy living.  Each of these companies offers a variety of plans and what is covered can vary by state. You can find out exactly what your health insurance plan covers in one of the following ways:

  • Call the membership services number on the back of your card and ask a representative if nutrition counseling is covered by your plan.

  • If your insurance as an online portal, you can look at your covered benefits online.

  • If your health insurance through your job, you can talk with you company's benefits administrator about how to find what is covered under your health plan.

Aetna

Covers nutrition counseling as preventative care for individuals with obesity, diabetes, eating disorders and certain other chronic conditions. Referral from physician needed and must see a licensed nutrition care provider such as a registered dietician or licensed nutritionist.

CareFirst 

CareFirst generally covers nutritional visits, always check with you plan provider to see exactly what is covered. CareFirst also offers a robust wellness program to support members health called CareFirst Wellbeing. Through the program you have access to a wide variety of digital tools, health coaching, weight management and diabetes management.

Maryland Medicaid 

Maryland Medicaid covers nutritional counseling for children under age 21. They may cover participants beyond age 21 if they are in the Rare and Expensive Case Management (REM) Program.
